The alternate ending, in contrast, befits 28 Days Later's overarching tone because it gives a glimmer of hope but does not downplay everything that led to it.Video captures terrifying moments during armed robbery at West Town liquor store For a deeply unhappy movie, in which Jim is not free from the world's tragedies and uncertainties even when he dreams, the ending seems a little too positive. However, 28 Days Later snags that away as well by killing off Frank and putting Jim, Selena, and Hannah at the mercy of the military troop.Ĭonsidering the dark tone of the entire movie, 28 Days Later's final cut's ending seems a little inconsistent because of how it suddenly flips Jim and Selena's script and makes it incredibly hopeful. Time and again, they do find hope, especially after they cross paths with Frank and his daughter. Throughout the movie, as Jim and Selena navigate the desolate world around them, there is always an impending sense of doom. Even in its prologue, where it portrays the pandemic's ground zero, 28 Days Later does not shy away from gritty realism and heavy bloodshed. Not to mention, it also assures audiences that even the in the face of the gravest tragedies, humanity can find a way to move forward and rebuild society.īy showing a decaying view of an empty London, 28 Days Later sets the tone for all the bleakness that lies ahead in Jim's storyline. The end of Jim's arc is bittersweet, but it marks the inception of a new hopeful chapter for Selena and Hannah. While Major Henry West tries to force his ways on Selena and Hannah but ends up becoming no less mindlessly wicked than the zombies, Jim shows that there are better and more humane methods of restoring normalcy in their dark world. His selfless death is also hopeful in the sense that it contrasts the selfishness of Major Henry West and his corrupt troop, who are willing to give up on their core moral values for the sake of humanity's survival. Jim's sacrifice serves as a catalyst for change in Selena's perception and inspires her to keep fighting against the adversities their hostile world throws at them. Jim's death in the alternate ending makes 28 Days Later more haunting, but it does not completely eliminate the movie's overarching themes of hope. While the final cut's ending still works since it leaves audiences with a sense of hope after an overly dour depiction of a zombie apocalypse, it seems to detach itself from the rest of the storyline because it takes away the element of risk and suspense that make viewers curious about the fate of the characters. By establishing that Jim will always come out unscathed from perilous situations and survive deadly gun wounds, the movie diminishes the feeling of real danger that it brings to the table with Frank and Mark's deaths. The final cut's ending, on the other hand, seems to make Jim immune to the perils of 28 Days Later's gruesome world. By killing off Jim (played by sci-fi staple Cillian Murphy) in its final arc, 28 Days Later further nails down the high stakes of its action and drama by proving that even the protagonist cannot get a plot armor in its unforgiving world. In its world, where a drop of blood is all takes to transmit the virus from one person to another, 28 Days Later keeps reminding audiences that even primary characters like Frank do not stand a chance against the raging virus. From the opening scene in which eco-terrorists unknowingly unleash a virus to the final arc where Jim wages a war against the military base camp, 28 Days Later is all about high stakes, shock-and-awe action.
